For those of you thinking about going with Windows Vista, here are a few things I have experienced.
1. Many older printers are not supported. My Lexmark
X5150 would not function with Vista and Lexmark had no plans for writing a new
driver since the printer was 4 years old. GOOD NEWS: Best Buy had a Lexmark
X1270 for $49.00 - Works great with Vista.
2. Many older programs do not work correctly. My quicken
2004 would not back up files correctly. Fortunately there was a way around
this and I have to put up with a few minor extra steps. Outlook 2002 would
also not save passwords - this was annoying so I went with the Vista Built-In
Windows Mail. This works great and is like an enhanced version of Outlook
Express.
3. The upgrade/installation process was tricky...for
instance, I couldn't have a printer plugged in or the installation would fail.
It took me 4 tries to get this up and running.
4. On the PLUS side, Windows Vista loads twice as fast on
my PC (which is a 1.8 GHZ, Dual Core with 1 GB of RAM).
5. I needed to Fax some documents recently and discovered that Vista Home Premium DOES NOT support faxing. Only the Business and Ultimate Editions of Vista includes this capability. To further complicate the issue, I figured a third-party software company has a Vista Capable Faxing Program - NOPE! Not yet anyway, but from what I read, there are several companies working on this. So if you need Faxing capability, keep this in mind. If you are planning on purchasing a new computer, ask if Windows XP is an option instead of Vista, I have read where some manufacturers will give you XP loaded on the computer but will also give you the Vista DVD for later upgrading.
If you're running custom business software, DO NOT make
the move to Vista without speaking with the software vendors first to
determine if it will run under Vista. From what I hear, a service pack for
Vista is already in the works to correct some issues...I do not have specifics
as of this date. If you're adventurous, you can make the move to Vista for
$99 to $350, depending on the version you select. Most home users should
choose Vista Home Premium which goes for $159.00 in the upgrade version.
